James chapter 5

As a preface to this chapter, I think it’s important to understand who specifically James is speaking of in the first several verses. Otherwise, it may seem as though he is saying that being wealthy is evil. To the contrary, he is referring to a specific group of people. In his study notes on this chapter, John MacArthur explains, “Unlike the believing rich in Timothy’s congregation (1 Tim. 6:17-19), these are the wicked wealthy who profess Christian faith and have associated themselves with the church,…Continue Reading “James Chapter 5”

James Chapter 4

1-10 Again, we see in this chapter the directness of James. He pulls no punches, yet as his mentor, Jesus, he says it all with a heart of love for the sinful, unrepentant people he is addressing. He left off chapter 3 contrasting God’s wisdom, with the devilish wisdom of the world. He continues to contrast the way of God with the way of the world in Chapter 4. He begins with several pointed questions. Don’t you know why you continue to argue and fight?…Continue Reading “James Chapter 4”

James Chapter 3

1-12 James begins this chapter by commanding the people to be very careful about taking a leadership role. I don’t believe he says this to discourage believers who felt called to teach or preach, but as a way to punctuate the importance of these positions. We know from Matthew 23, that in the days of Jesus, the scribes and Pharisees loved to be esteemed by others. They loved to sit in places of honor, and loved to be called rabbi, or teacher, by others. Yet,…Continue Reading “James Chapter 3”

1-13 You may recall that we left off Chapter 1 with James explaining one of the ways you can tell the difference between someone who merely has an external “religion”, i.e. rituals and routines, and one who has a genuine internal faith is by how they treat people. Do they take time to meet the needs of those who are the most helpless in our world – the orphan, the widow and others who can do nothing in return for your kindness. He continues with…Continue Reading “James Chapter 2”

1-4 From the very first verse of the chapter, I was struck by the amazing grace of God and the change Jesus can make in a life, even the life of a doubting, perhaps jealous, half-brother. In it, James brings greetings and boldly labels himself as a servant of God andĀ of the Lord Jesus Christ. What a change had taken place in his life because of the resurrection of his brother who later became his Savior. James had transformed from the early days of doubting…Continue Reading “James Chapter 1”

The first book we will study together is James. Why? Well, I am involved in a Bible study with some ladies from our area. We normally take the summers off, and last year we ended the school year with the book of Acts. I loved it so much I decided to go back through and chronologically read the other books of the Bible that were written during the same time frame as Acts. James just happens to be first on the list. This is how…Continue Reading “The Book of James”
